The Holy Mountain

Participants needed:
Compassionate psychonauts to the front, we’re not just looking for team members, we are looking for family, like-minded Burners who know and are not afraid to get involved, get dirty and get down. We’re a camp that believes in and applies the founding principles of Burn, and we’re open to Virgin and experienced Burners, local and international. What we are: We are a bunch of psychonauts We value kindness even in conflict We are philosophical and get into deep soul chats We value rest, quiet, relaxation and exploration as much if not more than the party We aim for conscious connection with self, others and the planet We celebrate our creativity and bring our artistic gifts to the space A comfortable and restful home in the craziness that can be Burn We are a queer and sex-positive camp We try to live the 11 principles to the best of our ability So if this sounds like your jam and you’re looking for a quiet oasis in the desert then you may have found your new home! What we are not… ⛔️ A loud party camp ⛔️ A plug and play space where you arrive and don’t participate ⛔️ A place to get drunk or just get high on amphetamines all the time

Project Description:

Leave your dust-covered shoes and your greed-weary self at the door and step into the magick of the Alchemist’s Lounge. Surrender into the couches and cushions and the gentle music – we might serve you charmed chai if your timing is right. Become an artist or a muse; consecrated or enchanted…

2026 will be the third instillation of The Holy Mountain at AfrkaBurn, as a theme camp we provide a public space, a public service, a functional part of Tankwa Town. We put our efforts into supporting each other as a group, but also into creating something for the general public of Tankwa Town to experience.

Inspired by the 1973 Alexandro Jodorowsky film, ‘The Holy Mountain’, this theme camp aims to be a sanctuary and a stage, a journey and a destination. If you pass through the gateway, a comfortable chill space with couches, cushions and carpets awaits you, along with some supplies to express your creativity, and world music in the background. Everything that happens next is up to the mystery of time. You might be surprised, perhaps by yourself.

If you’re into the esoteric and occult world, are a little weird or interested in creating a space or offering a gift that will help yourself and others gain insight, expand consciousness, facilitate connections we might be the camp for you.

Details of Gift:

A home away from home, a place out of the dust – our space is always open, even when we aren’t running workshops we remain open as a place of sanctuary, rest and retreat.

Besides being a refuge we offer a place to explore art, music, Tarot, story telling and connections.

Our aim is to build a community within the greater Burn community and foster relationships that can be carried into the default world.

Palm to Soul | Sanctuary for Release

The core concept of Palm to Soul is to cradle the collective act of expression within the hands of a monument. From afar, the twin open palms form a beacon of welcome; up close, they define a sanctuary of release balanced between monumentality and humility. The space encourages radical inclusion and personal transformation within a collective gesture of care. Participants of all identities, expressions, and backgrounds are invited to complete the artwork through their presence and offerings. Palm to Soul is a quiet act of resistance: against marginalisation, erasure, and silence. It is a liberated space shaped by queer hands and allied voices that holds room for grief, joy, rage, tenderness, transition, solidarity and celebration. It welcomes the transgender body, the femme voice, the mother in mourning, the queer elder, the activist, and the survivor. It honours protest and prayer in equal measure. Narrative: The journey into the piece begins at an outer ring of small ceramic hands (That held quite space in 2025). Each ceramic palm carries an intention or message. Visitors enter by walking this ring, symbolically leaving behind burdens or offering intentions at each small hand. Moving inward, the large wooden palms receive these offerings and “hold” them in trust through the week. Throughout AfrikaBurn, people add poems, notes, drawings, fabrics, and other mementos to the structure, building a shared archive of hopes, celebration, and prayers. At the end of the week (Saturday at Sunset), the hands fold inward and ignite, releasing all collected stories and intentions into the sky as ash. By the next morning, the desert floor is restored to emptiness, completing a narrative cycle of expression, catharsis, and renewal.

Theme Camp
The Pancake People

The Pancake People has become one of the most loved Theme Camps at Afrikaburn. This is because of the crew’s overwhelming commitment to share love and joy that spreads from our camp like a blanket over the Playa. We do this at a time when most burners are hungover and moody from a night of partying and processing. We dance the night away just like every one else but then we wake up, wipe the sleep from our eyes, clean up, get the batter going, get the Dj going and then open our hearts to welcome in children and adults alike for the best morning experience you will ever have ! Burners walk into our camp grumpy and leave with a heart full of love to share with all the other burners they will meet that day. We have been doing this every morning for over 10 years on the trot and have a huge community of Pancake People lovers who come for their dose of love, joy and cinnamon!

Artwork
The Sentinel

The Sentinel is a large-scale sculptural installation that embodies the journey of confronting fear and discovering the innocence that lies beneath it. At first sight, the piece presents itself as a towering, fearsome creature. A four-metre-tall humanoid tree, part rooted, part rising, as if it has just pulled itself from the desert floor. Its wooden limbs twist outward, its face leans downward, looming over those who approach. From below, visitors find themselves in a stare-down with the creature: a moment of primal confrontation, fear meeting fear. Participants are also invited to write a message on a paper tag and tie it to the artwork – words, phrases, or drawings that represent what holds them back. These offerings become part of the sculpture itself, fluttering like leaves in the wind.
