Camp 404

Participants needed:
We’re not currently recruiting new camp members (our chaos quota is full). BUT! If you’re a DJ, musician, performer, activity host, or general bringer of weird and wonderful energy, we want to hear from you! We’re keen on folks who want to gift their craft. Think: 🎧 Rhythm wranglers: Downtempo/ambient/vibey DJs 🎭 Movement facilitators, comedians, or entertainers 🕯️ Cult starters, séance hosts, or intervention runners Our lounge is a dreamy hybrid of cozy couches and open space, perfect for performances, group wiggles, communal experiments in connection and general shenanigans. We serve brunch at 11am, which means things start buzzing around 10am.

Project Description:

Camp 404 will always be a place for the lost, whether it is weary burners who need a rest from the hustle and bustle, or real emergencies like people who are having troubles in their camp and need a place to stay (our shadow gift: The Orphanage). Our most fundamental goal is to provide a safe space for Burners where they can feel at home, comfortable, seen, accepted and provided for (brunch, snacks & water). Think radical hospitality for the body and soul.

But we don’t simply seek to satisfy people’s basic needs, no, our mission is to help people suspend their disbelief and to share our idea of fun with the world. We’re a wacky bunch of misfits who love to indulge in nonsense and shenanigans. We welcome games, activities, tomfoolery, the bizarre and the hilarious.

Camp 404 is not appropriate for children or for adults who don’t act like children.

We are 404, the lost clutter of imagination. 404 is a place of confusion. Where are we? What’s going on? How did we get here? Why did we get here? It’s in this blanket fort of opportunity that we embrace the error codes of life and dive into all the lost expression, confused intention and deliberate alliteration that makes life interesting.

Details of Gift:

As a theme camp we provide a public space (our 24/7 lounge) and a public service (vegan brunch Tues-Sun). In our lounge you will always find snacks, a friendly face, some knick-knacks, woo-bops and wobbles. We also host activities and impromptu parties.

Our creative crew have produced an artwork each year for the last 4 years (Infinity Duck, LED Gateway, Shadow Box and String Thing) which we seem to be collecting on our camp’s stoep. We will see what they come up with for 2026. We’re also home to the Now Now Meow Meow mutant.

From 404 also comes The Dance of 1000 Flames which is the fire jam that happens before The Clan burns.

Joining Requirements:

We put our efforts into supporting each other as a team (40 friends from around the world). Everyone gets involved to plan, create and build 404, either physically or digitally. Only those with iron clad excuses skip build, strike, truck pack and unpack. During Afrikaburn, our team operate in shifts to ensure camp runs like clockwork. This includes cooking, cleaning, moop sweeps, power, activities etc. All members are also encouraged to volunteer.

Additional Details:

Fire dancer? Pop in to 404 to get the low down on Dance of 1000 Flames and any other fire jams we might be planning. Fire is more fun with friends. 🔥

The Crossing

The Crossing consists of two groupings of elements. A rigid line cuts through the landscape, a boundary that may represent law, structure, or control. Intersecting this line are more organic forms that rise irregularly, as though shaped by wind, erosion, or time. The line may be read as a border or a threshold, a boundary between order and chaos, captivity and freedom, life and death. Movement unfolds across this divide. From one perspective, the passage across the line could represent departure or exile, figures leaving something familiar behind. From another, the same movement may suggest arrival, a transition toward possibility and renewal. The Crossing comes together through shared effort, people learning, experimenting, problem-solving, and physically constructing something at scale. It exists because of a community, for a short time, shaped by the desert and the people within it. As with many desert installations, the sculpture is intended to transform through fire. When it ultimately burns, the work completes its own crossing, shifting from structure into flame, light, and ash.

Switch Off to Switch On

Against the backdrop of intense global noise, we are bringing one of the largest artworks to AfrikaBurn: Switch Off to Switch On. A towering brain-shaped sanctuary designed to help people pause, reconnect, and return to the world with renewed clarity. Participants climb into the structure, enter a quiet interior space of light and sound, and descend via a DNA-inspired helix slide. The journey mirrors the experience many of us seek: stepping away from noise to rediscover our inner signal.

We’re taking what worked in 2025 and making it a little cozier and a lot more intentional.
