Project Description:

THE HUGGAS AND THE LITTLE BOOKIE NOOK

Meet the Oxytocin Team – Home of the Huggas!

If human connection is your art form and hugs are your medium, then you’ve found your tribe. At Huggas Camp, we celebrate warmth, joy, and the sneaky science of oxytocin – that little rush of happiness only a good hug can bring.

Every morning and afternoon, our apron‑clad Huggas prepare to top up the Binnekring with love. Step up to our “Hug Menu” and choose your embrace: gentle squeeze, bear hug, slow melt, or anything in between. Not seeing what you need? Order “off‑menu” – innovation is how new hugs are born! Whether you’re giving or receiving, you’ll leave a little lighter than before.

Our Hug Lounge is the heart of the camp – a soft, glowing nest of cushions, mats, fairy lights, and mellow music. It’s a place to land, recharge, and connect. Makers will find art supplies scattered about, because creativity often blooms when we relax together. The lounge stays open until the night’s last heartbeat drifts to sleep.

Tucked close to the centre is our Bookie Nook, a tiny sanctuary lined with pages and peace. It’s a quiet pocket for anyone needing to rest, reflect, or reset with a story. It’s open daily until 7 pm, perfect for a moment of stillness before the evening revelry begins.

We’re inviting new camp members who believe in the power of presence. If you love to greet strangers like friends, help hold emotional space, create little moments of magic, and keep the hugs flowing – this is your home at AfrikaBurn. Bring your energy, creativity, some camp love, and your best hugs. We’ll provide the rest.

Join the Oxytocin Team — come help us make the desert a little softer.

House of Umbra

House of Umbra is an installation that brings art and performance from the ethereal to the real. This piece is designed to bring stage performance to the ground level. The House is a 11.42ft height – 95 sq.ft triangular prism with shadow screens on three of its sides. This is a space for dancers, musicians, artists and participants to design a performance in real time. A kaleidoscope of abstract colours and designs are projected on the inside of the structure. Dancers, movers and aerialists play with projections showing the distortion and abstraction of the body, using shadows to facilitate. They transform the House into a space that illuminates their movement, drawing attention to their bodies amongst vibrant projections that create shadows. It is also interactive, a chance for audiences to create and embody sound and images. Passers can enter the structure and play behind the screens. This prism shines bright in the desert, illuminating bodies and creating shadows. Come search for this bright light on your journey and dance in a sea of colour. House of Umbra is an interactive light installation that welcomes all kinds of performers to get lost in its light.

Pamoja Project

Emphasising the “Africa” in “AfrikaBurn”, we bring African music (afrohouse, afrobeats, amapiano) to the desert through our (afro)house parties hosted from ~1-4ish each afternoon. During the mornings we serve Rooibos & Rusks, and during the full week you can create new global connections: our camp represents many nationalities, from South Africa to Brazil, from Namibia to France, from Tanzania, to Lebanon, and more…

Tracings of Impermanence

Tracings of Impermanence is a land-based spatial installation for the Tankwa /Karoo desert ecology. The project is conceived as a cartographic sigil created from the earth it stands upon and is raised as a witness to the entanglement of species and forces across time. We propose this structure as an invitation to sense the desert as a living field of forces and lineages: wind, water, heat, dust; migration routes of birds and animals; indigenous flora; the movements of pastoralist peoples suchas the San and Khoekhoe; the treaded path of the voortrekker, and of course an ancient ocean that once covered this basin, leaving mineral memory in the playa.
