Desperately Seeking Supplier and Theme Camps Liaison

Have you got what it takes to enthusiastically join this incredible portfolio as the liaison between theme camps and suppliers? To create, facilitate and evaluate the constant efforts being made to strive towards better contributions and participation?

We need you as our Supplier and Theme Camps Liaison.

AfrikaBurn is seeking a dedicated and organised individual to join our team as a Supplier and Theme Camps Liaison. This role is crucial in ensuring smooth communications and coordination between theme camps, suppliers, and our on site Suppliers and Theme Camps teams. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in upholding the principle of Decommodification, fostering cooperation, and ensuring the well-being of our contributors.

AfrikaBurn is the strategic driver of Burning Man culture in the Southern African region and plays a significant role in the arts and culture sector of South Africa. Most known for its flagship event in the Tankwa Karoo, as a public benefit organisation, AfrikaBurn is the human scaffold that helps a diverse creative community propel numerous arts and development projects. AfrikaBurn’s motto is to “Invent the world anew” and we constantly strive towards this.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre Burn in Town:

  • Manage relevant email inboxes according to need with responses in less than 24 hours.
  • Maintain databases for both theme camps and suppliers
  • Ad hoc admin duties as needed
  • Attend creative catch up meetings in person at Junction on Tuesdays

Pre Burn On Site (Build Week):

  • Act as point of contact between the theme camps and the suppliers, with the aim of upholding Decommodification by limiting interactions between customers and commercial entities. 
  • Meet Theme Camps as they arrive and facilitate contact with suppliers. Be on call to offer assistance as needed by facilitating cooperation and self reliance of our contributors.
  • Assist with problem solving and issue resolution using the FLAME approach, enabling people to find their own solutions first
  • Monitor adherence to crew welfare agreement by suppliers
  • Flag anything out of the ordinary to the relevant lead

Burn On Site:

  • Monday – assist with any issues still pending from build week
  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – facilitate delivery zone 
  • Monitor camps and flag any potential or suspected Plug, Play  and Profit activities to the Theme Camp and Suppliers leads
  • Sunday – Supplier gate reopens, oversee theme camp strike in conjunction with supplier team. Offsite latest tuesday

Post Burn Town:

  • Attend relevant debriefs as scheduled
  • Prepare and deliver reports to the Supplier Team and Theme Camps.

Schedule:

  • January & February – 1 day/week (Tuesdays in the Office)
  • 1 March – 19 April – 2 days/week (Tuesdays in the Office)
  • 20 – 30 April – Full time on site at Quaggafontein
  • 1-7 May – Shifts on site at Quaggafontein
  • 8 – 30 May – 1 day/week as required for debrief and reporting 

Requirements:

  • Must have attended minimum 2 AfrikaBurns and preferably worked at the Burn 
  • Proficient with Google Suite/ Google Apps specifically Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Forms, (or Microsoft Office – including Excel, Word and Powerpoint )
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Administrative Skills
  • Drivers Licence or demonstrated plan to get one
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Has undergone Ranger Training (or will attend the first ranger training post appointment)
  • Preferred: Events industry experience in the Western Cape region

This is a paid contract role on a part-time basis initially to end July 2024, with a focus on deliverables in the months preceding and following the event (end April 2024).
