La Marmelada Orchestra

Participants needed:
Musicians of all kinds. Instrumentalists, vocalists, producers, experimental sound makers — anyone comfortable listening, improvising, and collaborating. We especially welcome: • strings • horns • percussion • keys / synths • guitars • unusual instruments • strong rhythmic or melodic improvisers More important than virtuosity is openness, musical curiosity, and the ability to play with others.

Project Description:

La Marmelada Orchestra is a spontaneous, collaborative band forming in the dust of Tankwa Town.

Musicians from different backgrounds come together to create live sessions that exist only once — improvised, playful, and alive. Strings, horns, percussion, synths, voices, strange instruments, familiar ones — everything can find its place.

The orchestra emerges during the week through open rehearsals, jams, and experiments at La Casa Timeless, eventually leading to collective performances where individual voices blend into one living sound.

No fixed repertoire.
No strict genre.
Just musicians listening to each other and building something real in the moment.

If you like the idea of making music with people you’ve never met before — in the middle of the desert — this might be for you.

Details of Gift:

A living orchestra.

A place where musicians can meet, play, experiment, and create together — without pressure, hierarchy, or rigid structure.

Throughout the week we will host open jam sessions, rehearsals, and collaborative moments, leading to shared performances where the orchestra takes shape in real time.

For the audience, it’s a rare experience: music being born on the spot, unpredictable and unrepeatable.

For the musicians, it’s an invitation to connect, improvise, and create something bigger than any individual performance.

Joining Requirements:

• You must already be attending AfrikaBurn • Bring your own instrument(s) and any essential gear • Be available for rehearsals / jam sessions during the week • Be open to improvisation and collaborative creation Just bring your instrument or let us know your requirements – maybe we already have something

Additional Details:

La Marmelada Orchestra is hosted by La Casa Timeless, one of the musical spaces connected to the INSIGHT art car.

The orchestra evolves through the week — meaning musicians can join, contribute, and shape the sound as it grows.

Some of the most memorable moments at the Burn happen when strangers create something together.

This is an invitation to be part of that.

House of Umbra

House of Umbra is an installation that brings art and performance from the ethereal to the real. This piece is designed to bring stage performance to the ground level. The House is a 11.42ft height – 95 sq.ft triangular prism with shadow screens on three of its sides. This is a space for dancers, musicians, artists and participants to design a performance in real time. A kaleidoscope of abstract colours and designs are projected on the inside of the structure. Dancers, movers and aerialists play with projections showing the distortion and abstraction of the body, using shadows to facilitate. They transform the House into a space that illuminates their movement, drawing attention to their bodies amongst vibrant projections that create shadows. It is also interactive, a chance for audiences to create and embody sound and images. Passers can enter the structure and play behind the screens. This prism shines bright in the desert, illuminating bodies and creating shadows. Come search for this bright light on your journey and dance in a sea of colour. House of Umbra is an interactive light installation that welcomes all kinds of performers to get lost in its light.

Pamoja Project

Emphasising the “Africa” in “AfrikaBurn”, we bring African music (afrohouse, afrobeats, amapiano) to the desert through our (afro)house parties hosted from ~1-4ish each afternoon. During the mornings we serve Rooibos & Rusks, and during the full week you can create new global connections: our camp represents many nationalities, from South Africa to Brazil, from Namibia to France, from Tanzania, to Lebanon, and more…
