Disconnect to Reconnect

Choose to be a Wi-Fi-Free Camp this year during AfrikaBurn event days.

AfrikaBurn offers a rare opportunity to experience a bubble of compassionate community, art, music, and spectacular nature that exists for just one week of the year.

It is a place where inclusivity, kindness and personal authenticity are the norm, rather than the exception – it’s a very special human experience that helps us transform into better versions of ourselves.

This transformation doesn’t happen as soon as you ring the Virgin Bell and roll around in the dust. It happens incrementally, layer by layer, hour by hour, as you spend time in the Tankwa Town bubble and experience what it actually means to ‘Invent your world anew’.

The opportunity to remove ourselves entirely from the default world and be fully present in the here and now is a rare treat and the longer we spend immersed in the Burn reality bubble, the more we can heal, grow, and explore our authentic selves.

The Leak in the Binnekring Bubble.

Every time we go online, we prick that bubble.  We remove ourselves from the event and the “here-nowness” of the experience – going online rapidly pulls us back into the concerns and complexities of the “default world,” decreasing physical human interaction and increasing digital distraction.

There is plenty of credible research that shows social media is addictive, can exacerbate attention deficit disorder and increase neurosis – and lots of people coming to AfrikaBurn this year are already addicted to their digital devices.

For some participants, the idea of disconnecting from the internet for just one day can make them feel anxious and uncomfortable – but often what makes a great Burn is feeling a bit uncomfortable, being unsure of what’s going to happen next and getting out of our day to day routines and comfort zones.

If one person in a camp checks their phone, it’s a distraction for that individual; if a whole camp is doing it, it changes the experience for everyone.

By choosing our camps to stay offline during the event days, we contribute to a tangible shift in the collective consciousness and in doing so, we are gifting each other our full, undivided presence, which is one of the most radical things we can do in a digitally distracted age.

This year, we’re inviting all the theme camps, support camps and every camp in between to choose not to provide internet access to their theme camp members or other participants during the 7 event days and nights.

By keeping our camps and spaces offline, we aren’t just “unplugging”; we are protecting the magic of Afrikaburn for everyone.

Let’s choose to be here, now, together.

‘I can’t leave my business / family matters unattended for a week – I need to bring my own Starlink to the Burn so I can check in with the default world periodically during event days’

No problem. We’re not asking you to leave your Wi-Fi routers behind – we’re asking you to use them wisely, keep them encrypted and not open them up to other people in your camp unless absolutely necessary and even then on a temporary basis only – to restrict their usage to important and essential business only and encourage people to stay offline unless absolutely necessary.

‘My camp leads and sometimes camp members need access to internet during the build and break days’

No problem – this is really about shutting down the wifi during the 7 event days – but even during the build and break days, we recommend keeping wifi provision for your camp to a necessary minimum and get them accustomed to being offline.

Did you know the org offers wifi vouchers for participants?

If participants really need to get online, they can obtain a 15 min wifi voucher from the Org on site – however, the effort involved in this means that people only do so if it’s really necessary for them.

What we are asking you to do from here as a theme camp lead

Is click on the link embedded here and sign your camp up to support the Disconnect to Reconnect initiative – then ensure that no one in your camp is broadcasting their private Starlink during event days.
