AfrikaBurn 2024: 29 April to 5 May

Onward and Awkward: Bye Bye Wesbite

Such memories!! My awakening occurred in 2017. Her name was Liesl, and she blew smoke up my then-miserable arse. Her message was simple. Put AfrikaBurn on your bucket list. Results guaranteed.

Being the cautious type I dived into the website where wonderful things emerged. Scrawny desert people were seen doing amazing things in a hostile environment. And pictures were posted by decent photographers going back years as chronological evidence of previous events. Enthralled I dug deeper into the revelations from wordsmiths and historians. The website was a treasure trove of useful information guiding me to a world far removed from my own.

I do not know whose efforts and skills went into the development of this archive and information guide. I suspect that Travis Lyle and The Tim were part of the team of willing slaves who maintained the masterpiece. Their work and that of others was displayed for an unsuspecting world to enjoy. Monique, the Goddess of the Tankwa, keeps her loyal soldiers hidden from public view. But I know that the website did not create itself. And it changed my life for the better.

And like the move from Stonehenge, we are transitioning to a new masterpiece befitting the new home in Quaggafontein. New wondrous things are sure to emerge to lure unsuspecting city slickers out of their comfort zones. And to continue the education of newbies into the rules which guide the success of the event.

Here’s a toast to the old and very successful website 001. And another to the birth of a new era. 002 has a lot to live up to. But I know that the pixie dust never fails. Success is guaranteed.
