AfrikaBurn Seeks an Executive Director For Operations Powerhouse

AfrikaBurn is seeking a dynamic and experienced Executive Director for Operations (EDO). The position will  be focused on managing general operations, reporting directly to the Board of Directors, and will work in  tandem with the Executive Director of Development and the Executive Director for Culture. 

AfrikaBurn is the strategic driver of Burning Man culture in the Southern African region and plays a significant role in the arts and culture sector of South Africa. Most known for its flagship event in the Tankwa Karoo, as a public benefit organisation, AfrikaBurn is the human scaffold that helps a diverse creative community propel numerous arts and development projects.  

We are looking for an experienced individual who can effectively participate in collective governance, as well as independently organise, manage, and inspire. In particular, the EDO will have oversight of finance, compliance, information systems, land and property management, occupational health and safety, and event production. 

The EDO will be responsible for the functional operations of the organisation, the collective development and execution of strategy, and productive engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders.  Rooted in AfrikaBurn’s ethos, this position embodies servant leadership, prioritising collaboration, accountability, and the well-being of the community.

Responsibilities 

  • Contribute to organisational strategy and structure, and ensure effective implementation.
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of AfrikaBurn’s operational and financial systems
  • Oversee compliance and risk management, ensuring accountability and transparency
  • Manage financial planning, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Oversee land management and infrastructure development at AfrikaBurn’s Tankwa land (Quaggafontein and Vaalfontein) and at AfrikaBurn’s Salt River headquarters
  • Lead IT systems, data management, and operational technology improvements
  • Build a constructive, supportive, happy team and working culture 
  • Oversee financial budgets (long-term, short-term, and project-specific), and monitor variances
  • Oversee the event production processes with support from the operations team, including ideation,  planning, budgeting, communications, and execution 
  • Be the ultimate point of contact for the operations team and contractors, where they cannot resolve  problems on their own 
  • Monitor and report on key indicators of strategy actualisation 
  • Take ownership of new projects, especially in relation to the Tankwa land
  • Develop policies and standard operating procedures, where those do not exist or where gaps exist 

Minimum Requirements 

  • At least ten years of experience in senior operational, general management, financial or project management roles.
  • Proven financial management ability in multi-departmental budgets, including management of financial reporting.
  • Relevant tertiary degree in finance, business management or project management is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of IT systems, databases, and digital workflows
  • Understanding of governance, compliance, and PBO/non-profit management in South Africa.
  • Based in – or able to relocate to – Cape Town, South Africa 
  • Attended an AfrikaBurn Event
  • Experience with infrastructure or land management projects is advantageous

    I can do at least 15 out if f the 24 pre requisites, I am sure. I have had success in a few entrepreneurial companies since 2005 here in Cape Town. I consider myself highly skilled in people management,. Strategy & leadership is one ☝️ is one of my strongest suites. Despite not having attended ANY afrikaburn’s, being a super analytical person, I truly believe I could be a valuable part of this dynamic, pragmatic and above all dependable group. I am 55 years of age, having had many successful small businesses, one being my 4×4 campsite SECRET FALLS TUPBAGH, which was voted top 10 off road campsites in South Africa. I would know how to lead, am very cool with accounting- running a timber construction company called Swissline Design for 12 years. Well, I am your person. Now I work with my sister in our catering company. She is the chef, O am the strategist.

Afikaburn is my life, having run themecamps since 2017 & Garden of weeden since 2022, i live, eat sleep burn throught the year, having run containers this this year brought me intouch with most of burn people & different deparments & i loved it! Operations & making things happen, gettung shit done is my game, this is the perfect job for me!! Keeping burn as it is & living my life to the principals is exactly what im about! We have a 12th principle in our camp, bring the burn into the default world!!!

    1. I no nominate Greg for this position. As the leader of Garden of Weeden I have never seen a guy more focused or outcome driven with a vision that is far beyond. He is the man at the burn. Everyone comes to him for assistance with whatever it may be. Greg Greg Greg. Nobody better for the role.

    Is the application process still open for the Operations Director position for Afrikaburn?
    I only came across the ad today.
    If so I will submit my CV tomorrow. I am South African, based in Thailand and have been running festivals where for 15 years. I am the festival director and owner of our Holdings company Miracle Holdings Co LTD.
    I am currently the Festival Director for Thantawan Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand.

    I am very interested in this position. I have been involved in NPO project management for large events and have worked in various project management consulting firms in a senior positions for more than 15 years. I specialize in data and risk management, whilst having held the position of Treasurer for an international NPO. I have a vast experiemce in governance, project and events management. I am also versed with processes and digital media. I have been involved in the entertainment industry working with some of the very well known SA artists.   6. African burn has been a dream that I wanted to experience. Never been.
    The knowledge of organizing and managing is a natural thing with more than 18years experience in book keeping and jack of all trades. It’s seems that this would be ideal for a new experience to explore. Nothing is out of reach. The sky is the limit.
