We’re looking for a Volunteer Coordinator

AfrikaBurn is looking for a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to join our team in Cape Town until 30 September 2026.

We’re looking for an organised, people-focused professional who thrives in community environments and understands that strong volunteer coordination is the backbone of large-scale collaborative projects. This role supports and strengthens AfrikaBurn’s volunteer ecosystem across portfolios and the annual event cycle.

AfrikaBurn is the strategic driver of Burning Man culture in the Southern African region and plays a significant role in the arts and culture sector of South Africa. Most known for its flagship event in the Tankwa Karoo, as a public benefit organisation, AfrikaBurn is the human scaffold that helps a diverse creative community bring numerous projects and experiences to life.

Key responsibilities

  • Volunteer Systems & Administration:
    ➢ Manage volunteer databases, registrations, placements, and reporting;
    ➢ Maintain accurate records and improve volunteer processes and workflows;
    ➢ Support day-to-day administrative functions of the volunteer portfolio.
  • Volunteer Coordination & Support:
    ➢ Coordinate recruitment, onboarding, and placement across portfolios;
    ➢ Act as liaison between volunteers, portfolio leads, and event structures;
    ➢ Support scheduling, communication, conflict resolution, and retention initiatives;
    ➢ Foster a volunteer culture aligned with AfrikaBurn’s ethos.
  • Communications & Operations:
    ➢ Manage volunteer communications and ensure timely, accurate information flow;
    ➢ Collaborate internally to align volunteer capacity with operational needs;
    ➢ Contribute to reporting and flag risks relating to volunteer welfare or culture;
    ➢ Support volunteer coordination before, during, and after the annual event.
  • Event Coordination and Community Campaigns:
    ➢ Event planning and event coordination;
    ➢ Content creation, scheduling, and designing platforms for engagement;
    ➢Apply design thinking towards community intervention ;
    ➢ Show creative skills in product design and networking.

This position does require travel to Tankwa and occasional weekend/evening work.

Minimum Requirements 

  • A diploma or degree in Community Development, Event Management, Public Relations or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience coordinating volunteers, community projects, or large-scale events.
  • Strong organisational, administrative, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders effectively.
  • Is familiar with social media platforms and confident in content creation 
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (especially Sheets and Docs) and comfort working with database systems and digital tools.
  • Ability to learn and work within an hybrid environment
  • Has own car and drivers
  • Able to work in Cape Town
