Is AfrikaBurn just an amazing week in the desert?

It's true that once a year, we gather to build the incredible temporary city we call Tankwa Town - but AfrikaBurn’s impact isn’t limited to that amazing week we all share in the dust. It extends to community-based projects across South Africa – all of which make it possible to create a better world, by bringing the spirit of our community alive across South Africa.

But these projects require support and funding – and that’s where Dust Devils come in.

What is a Dust Devil? And how do you become one?

Named after the whirlwinds which spin off from a large burn, you become a Dust Devil by making a small monthly donation of just R100. By becoming a Dust Devil, your support provides the tools to realise wild imagination, and help unleash creativity in the default world through our year-round programmes.

From funding for rural teaching assistants in the Tankwa Karoo, through to youth skills training, and on to public art and community‑led creative projects, Dust Devils propel the energy of our community far beyond the Binnekring.

If you’ve ever wondered about how you could play a part in sharing the spirit of the burn, here’s your chance.

Join the MOMENTUM OF COMMUNITY

When you become a Dust Devil, your donation ripples throughout South Africa, supporting rural teaching assistants, covering learners’ school fees, facilitating animal welfare inspections; and funding skill transfer, urban public art and community-based creative activities, for all ages.

These programmes are collaboratively designed, principle-driven and community-led.

Dust Devils are critical to the momentum of AfrikaBurn’s culture – in a world gone crazy, their monthly donation builds resilience for our programmes by enabling new projects to be supported, and community members uplifted.

Dust Devils turn commitment into lasting change.

THE GOLD DUST

In 2012, AfrikaBurn began setting its sights beyond the Binnekring, initiating Outreach to support community development in the Tankwa Karoo, principally through Elandsvlei NGK Skool.

Activities and creative social projects, grew through Streetopia, Spark Grants, and Blank Canvas Express.

In 2020, AfrikaBurn became a Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation. During the pandemic it enacted the Dignity Project and Eco-Trip.  It has since added Hammerschool and Resilience in Shared Endeavour to its core year round programmes.

The movement has reached over 95 000 in South Africa and is growing beyond.

One example of our year-round programmes is Hammerschool, which hosts skills-sharing sessions.

Hosted by our lead instructor and DPW carpentry lead, Chantel, Hammerschool provides free workshops that open up new ways in which community members can grow their personal development by learning how to use power tools in a real working environment.

“My first AfrikaBurn was 2023, it was a total culture shock. I'd never been around so many people, so much colour, really something out of this world for me. I wanted to build the event from the ground up”

Meet advocates for a better world

“I believe in the principles of AfrikaBurn, and would like to be part of the initiative to help improve the lives of those less fortunate.”

"Knowing some of my donation goes toward bursaries and projects for kids in the Karoo communities, the ones who live there all year round while we just pass through ... that's the part that made me donate."

"AfrikaBurn gave me a community when I had none. Being a Dust Devil is the smallest possible repayment for something I can't really put a price on."
