Have you got what it takes to enthusiastically lead this incredible portfolio to make AfrikaBurn the leader in regenerative development? To create, facilitate and evaluate the constant efforts being made to strive towards a better future. We need you as our Net Positive Programme Coordinator

AfrikaBurn is the strategic driver of Burning Man culture in the Southern African region and plays a significant role in the arts and culture sector of South Africa. Most known for its flagship event in the Tankwa Karoo, as a public benefit organisation, AfrikaBurn is the human scaffold that helps a diverse creative community propel numerous arts and development projects. AfrikaBurn’s motto is to “Invent the world anew” and we constantly strive towards this.

This role will be integral in building a portfolio of regenerative initiatives and championing the Leave no Trace team. The purpose of this role is to drive and develop not only the Leave No Trace Portfolio, but also the Leave no Trace principle within the AfrikaBurn community year-round and at all AfrikaBurn events

Key Responsibilities:
Communication:

  • Review existing policies, protocols and communications
  • Plan pre-event communication drive through Comms (Newsletter and Socials) about the practical application of Leaving no trace and other established initiatives
  • Ensure correct content for direct communications through all facets of the organisation
  • Plan on-site communication drive
  • Face-to-face education drive with key Theme Camp/Art/MV LNT reps on proactive management
  • Post-event communication or Matter out of Place (MOOP) map and challenges faced

Data collection analysis and presentation:

  • Develop a scoring system with a long-term and nuanced view to track changes over time
  • Build a robust data capture system both analogue for desert and digital (spreadsheet) that can be used in different formats
  • Collaborate with Comms, Art and Theme Camps in the production of an accurate MOOP Map, reviewing standardised scores against the various sites
  • Develop and implement carbon audit
  • Work on different net-positive projects and models to be implemented

Develop and manage the LNT team:

  • In collaboration with Volunteer Services Coordinator identify volunteer requirements for event week and post-event
  • Review and update any training protocols for briefing LNT volunteers
  • Create shift schedules for event week and post-event
  • Build post-event volunteer LNT team

Procurement:

  • Conduct inventory of existing assets pre-event and maintain register post-event
  • Manage expenditures within budget
  • Propose budget development for the 2024 event with a long-term view
  • Provide Volunteer Services Coordinator with equipment for MOOP parade/ Swoops

Programme Development:

  • Establish an internal AfrikaBurn Green Initiative and ensure the principles are followed through on, throughout the organisation
  • Establish community links in Salt River towards improving the environmental health of our urban neighbourhood.
  • Play a role in the long-term regeneration planning at Quaggafontein
  • Identify links to opportunities within the Tankwa Community
  • Collect data and ensure resources are being utilised sustainably

Minimum Requirements:

  • Proficient with Google Suite/ Google Apps specifically Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Forms, (or Microsoft Office – including Excel, Word and Powerpoint )
  • Flexible working hours (availability though for the full event week at the main AfrikaBurn event and sub events)
  • Able to communicate across many channels – Slack, WhatsApp, email
  • Experience working within similar waste mitigation and management initiatives

This is a paid contract role on a part-time basis initially to end July 2023, with a focus on deliverables in the months preceding and following the event (end April 2023).
